V.I Prime Produce locally Grown: Market Open
Good morning Prime Produce Market is now open and accepting orders.
Berea Gardens: Market Open
Good Morning,
It seems the weather is going to let us get some good work done this week and the soil temperatures are finally warming enough to promote some actual growth outdoors. Last week the soil was only 61* at 4" deep; a temperature that we usually see in mid-March! It should be 75* at this time of year and the soil temperature is much more important to growth than air temperature.
We still have some nice Brassicas harvested from our high tunnels, but the cucumbers, squash, green beans, beets and other outdoor crops that normally start coming about now are way behind. We will just keep working at it and have them as soon as we can!
Blessings,
Bob & Lynnita

Some Growers News:
East Fork Farm: Luffa
What is a luffa? Think of a “scrubby” used in the shower. Maybe you think of a “sponge”. Luffa is a vegetable and a member of the squash family. When small (about 6") it can be eaten like okra. But at East Fork Farm, we allow them to remain on the vine and grow all summer long until right before the first frost. At that point, they are pulled, dried out, shucked of their outer hard flesh and stripped. This provides long cylindrical shaped sponge to use in many ways. We love our luffa. It has SO many uses. From cleaning your pots, pans and dishes, scrubbing showers, floors, to even a safe chew toy for dogs.
McIntosh Field & Flower: We are so excited to be back in action at the Stones River Market! We farm all of our flowers right here in Murfreesboro and keeping them as local as possible is our goal! We’ve got farm fresh cut flower bunches, gorgeous bright blue edible flowers, and loads of colorful floral confetti in the market this week! The growing season is in full swing after all this great rain and sunshine! Don’t miss out!
Quarter Spring Farm: is very excited to be processing new birds for the spring. We have several cuts back in stock this week, and should have even more on the market next week. We also have our usual collection of skin softening goat’s milk soaps and lotions. They would make a great gifts!
Pinky’s Micros: Microgreens and sprouts are extremely dense in vital enzymes, minerals and vitamins, and chlorophyll. There aren’t many foods you could eat that are fresher. Put them on your sandwich, top your salads with them, or use them in place of lettuce.
Our new Spring Seasonal Chef’s Blend:
Leeks, Dill, Purple Radish, & Golden Pea Shoots.
Every season we’ll be creating new blends to represent each season. Along with Peas, Rose Radish, Broccoli, Basic salad Mix, and Sunflower.
We are also offering our Freshly Juiced Frozen 2oz Wheatgrass Shots or Freshly Cut 4oz Wheatgrass.
Enjoy a dazzling array of new flavors. Plants are at their absolute peak of flavor intensity at this stage of life. They pack 40x more vital nutrients than their mature counterparts. Come check us out!"
Rainbow Hill Farm: We are back with a large selection of starter plants for your home gardens. Tomato, Peppers, Cucumbers, Muskmelon, Brussel Sprouts and more. Plants are in biodegratable cups, you only need to put them in the ground and water.
Shroomegy Gourmet Mushrooms: is growing some beautiful Rocky Top Blue Oysters this week! I replaced the button mushrooms in a Chicken Marsala with my blue oysters, and the flavor was fantastic. We also have some Lion’s Mane available. A great use for Lion’s Mane is to sauté it with butter and garlic. Toss with prepared spaghetti and parmesan cheese.
We are offering house dried, pesticide and chemical free Lion’s Mane powder! Lion’s Mane mushrooms contain bioactive substances that have beneficial effects on the body, especially the brain, heart, and gut. Research is being conducted into their possible effectiveness against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, neurological disorders, and even depression and anxiety. Add 2 teaspoons of powder to your coffee for a great nutrient boost!
Flying S Farms: We are so happy to be back in ‘the dirt’ again! We have some Produce coming in. This week Broccoli, Swiss Chard, Mixed Kale Bundle, Curly Leaf Lettuce and Hakurei Turnips. MISC MARKET NOTES
As just one little person in a big community, I feel privileged to be joining a group like Market At Dothan. It’s a unique and sweet thing to see people working so hard for better nourishment and life in the Wiregrass area. I went ahead and talked about nourishment in my product description, but it also works as a summary of why I feel that we need to fill the bread-bakery vacuum in the Dothan area.
“The ultimate staple food until only the last century or so, bread has rightly been used to symbolize life. However, it is because of the nutrition and easily-digestible properties of natural, whole wheat grain that our ancestors for thousands of years survived dark ages of wars, low technology and medicine, and hard labor. Modern wheat has been crossbred into dependence on pesticides, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers for its own survival, stripped of many of its nutrients, and loaded with gluten in a form that is difficult for the digestive system. For this reason, many gluten-sensitive shoppers or nourishment-minded bakers are turning back to the most ancient form of wheat in history: einkorn. Its genetic makeup is vastly simpler than that of other wheats, because it has never been crossbred. It has the lowest gluten, and, in our opinion, the richest and sweetest flavor. With the probiotics from sourdough (made using only wheat flour and the atmosphere of your local area), this bread could possibly be the healthiest food you could eat.” I hope we won’t stop asking ourselves, “What is one little step I can take to put more wholesome foods into my body?” Thank you for welcoming me! It’s so encouraging when a community builds community.

JBW: Hello Everyone! Here at JBW Farm Fresh we are excited to have some of our selections of beef back up for sale. We have been busy working on some new body products made with our beef tallow! Tallow has a high percentage of oleic acid, a well-known skin conditioner.
Tallow contains vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12, contributing to skin health and appearance. Given that the fat saturation of Tallow is close to human fat, the vitamins within it can be absorbed into the body easier, and it locks in moisture and nutrients without clogging your pores. This week we have added our Head-to-Toe / All Body Wash on the website for sale! It is a wonderful lathering, liquid wash that is so beneficial for your hair & body! Stay tuned for the rest of our upcoming Tallow body products! Have a blessed week :)
Mount Moriah Farms: Hey y’all! Thank you to everyone who purchased products from us at the Mother’s Day Event last weekend! We truly appreciate you choosing to support small businesses. We love making all of our products but couldn’t keep doing it without our loyal customers. We are currently milking five does and have five more does we will be breeding soon. Which happily means more kids in the fall! We choose to make goat’s milk soap because of the benefits to troubled skin. Goat’s milk has a PH level similar to ours so whenever there’s a deficiency it helps bring it back to the level it should be. If you have never tried some, we encourage you to!
We look forward to seeing you next Friday at one of our pickup locations. Thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
Martin's Farmstand: Strawberry update
The farmstand has an assortment of early spring goodies such as scallions (onion and garlic) rhubarb, asparagus, lettuce and kale. Also there are still beets carrots and potatoes. Mendy has baked a nice selection of honey wheat and sourdough bread and the bulk food room has flour, oatmeal, spices etc. This summer the stand is open every day from Tuesday through Saturday. We are closed on Sunday and Monday. We had a freeze here this week. At 11 pm it was already down to 30 degrees however it warmed up a bit towards morning. The relive humidity was around 60 percent during the cold night hours ( very dry) and there was some wind. One can irrigate the strawberries to help keep the frost off as water releases some heat as it transitions from water to ice . This only works though if the relitive humidity is high (near 100% with dew forming) with low or no wind speed. Water can not evaporate if the humidity is at 100% so evaporative cooling is not an issue in a normal frost. In a dry freeze such as we had this week the evaporative cooling effect will drop the leaf and flower temps to a few degrees below ambiant if some zealous farmer goes out and makes them wet. Do not put water on in those conditions as it is harmful not helpful. Covers do very little in wind. I judged that the best thing to do was to go to bed and sleep and hope for the best as there was nothing I could do that would be meaningful The later kinds of strawberries were not blooming yet so there was no damage. The earlier kinds lost anywhere from 20-50% of there flowers so this will effect the crop but is not a disaster as the remaining flowers will take up some of the slack. What would have been the first picking is gone. This was harsh winter for small fruit as the temps were up and down a lot with the snow melting from time to time. We also had a lot of wind which blew the leaf mulch off of them in areas. This has resulted in some damage but is again not disaster. There is enough damage though to some of the new plantings that I am thinking to plant a extra acre of berries this spring ( in addition to the 1 1/2 acre that is normally planted to replace old beds.)and not to renovate all of what was planted last year. Late May is the peak of asparagus season. During moments of abundance we will sell unbunched field run asparagus at $2.75 per lb if you take at least 1/2 lug. Daniel
